Martin Garner
I began a charity called Free Spirit in 2005 and one of the first dreams was to have a link with Rwanda. Through long-time friend Don Egan (RSVP Trust) I met the leaders of ANLM in Rwanda and a strong friendship began. Lots of activity has followed such as mission trips, child sponsorship, and work with returnees and vulnerable women. It’s an inspiring land and people to be connected to, and my family and I are very grateful to play a very small part in a much bigger story. It’s a number of really inspired individuals that makes up our Rwandachild team. Take a look:

I have always had a passion for changing the lives children in need, especially in developing countries. Over the years i have been involved in many mission trips and have always felt at home and most fulfilled spending time with the children I meet (I like adults too!) J I first met Martin Garner on such a trip to Rwanda in 2008 and immediately connected with him and the work being done by RwandaChild and ANLM. One thing led to another and here I am helping to coordinate our child sponsorship efforts. I love to be part of the connection that exists between a sponsor and a child and see how each become part of each others’ story. I am married to Lindsay and we have two spectacular sons; Jordan and Ethan. We are also foster parents to two other boys.

My background in overseas mission, including child sponsorship, goes back to 10 years living and working in Peru. In 2008 I had the chance to visit Rwanda, when, as someone had ‘warned’ me, Africa got into my blood. My passion in life is Jesus - and following from that, a heart for the marginalised, the poor and the lost. I have had the amazing experience of going to Rwanda 3 times, including last year a stay of 2 months. Visit number 4 (and maybe even 5!) are currently being planned. I am every day thankful to God for this opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless whether that be in finding and then encouraging child sponsors here in Ireland, or in bringing these lovely Rwanda children and their stories home in my heart.
